Munnar or Kodaikanal? How to Choose Between the Two Hill Stations

Updated 20 October 2026 · By the Hostyard Experience and Stay team

Munnar and Kodaikanal are two of South India's best-loved hill escapes, and they feel quite different. Munnar is tea country: rolling estates, viewpoints and the Kolukkumalai sunrise. Kodaikanal is a lake town in the Palani Hills, with forest walks, viewpoints and old-world charm.

Landscape

Munnar's hills are covered in tea, neatly clipped and stretching to the horizon, with grassland and shola forest higher up. Kodaikanal has more pine and eucalyptus forest, cliffs that drop away to the plains and a lake at the heart of town.

Things to do

Around Munnar and Suryanelli: the Kolukkumalai sunrise, Eravikulam National Park, Top Station, Anayirangal Dam and long drives through the estates. Around Kodaikanal: the lake, Coaker's Walk, Pine Forest, Pillar Rocks, waterfalls and the upper Palani villages.

Getting there

Munnar is usually reached from Kochi in Kerala, or from Madurai and Theni over the Bodimettu ghat. Kodaikanal is reached from Madurai or the Kodai Road railway station, or by road via Batlagundu or Palani. Check whether Kodaikanal needs an e-pass for your dates.

Who each suits

  • Choose Munnar and Suryanelli for tea country, sunrise trips and quiet evenings in the estates.
  • Choose Kodaikanal for lake walks, forests and a hill town with cafés and old churches.
  • Got a week? Do both. They are in neighbouring states and many travellers combine them.

Quick answers

Which is better for a first trip, Munnar or Kodaikanal?

Both work. Pick Munnar if tea landscapes and the Kolukkumalai sunrise appeal most, and Kodaikanal if you prefer a lake town with forest walks.

Can I visit Munnar and Kodaikanal in one trip?

Yes, with enough days. They are in neighbouring states and connected by road through Tamil Nadu. Allow a full day for the journey between them.
