How to Reach Suryanelli: A Practical Travel Guide
Updated 20 October 2026 · By the Hostyard Experience and Stay team
Suryanelli is a village in Kerala's Idukki district, in the highlands on the Chinnakanal side of Munnar. You reach it by road — through Munnar if you're coming from the Kerala side, or over the Bodimettu ghat if you're coming from Tamil Nadu.
Where Suryanelli is
Suryanelli sits among tea estates near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, on the road from Munnar towards Chinnakanal and Bodimettu. It is the starting point for jeeps to Kolukkumalai.
From Munnar
Take the road out of Munnar towards Devikulam and Chinnakanal. The route climbs through tea country and passes the Gap Road stretch, which is spectacular but can close after heavy rain — check conditions before you travel in the monsoon.
From Kochi
Cochin International Airport and the Aluva and Ernakulam railway stations are the usual starting points. The road goes inland through Kothamangalam and Adimali to Munnar, then on to Suryanelli. KSRTC and private buses run to Munnar; from there, local buses or taxis go on to Suryanelli.
From Tamil Nadu
From Bengaluru, Chennai or Madurai, travellers often come via Theni and Bodinayakkanur, then climb the Bodimettu ghat road into Kerala. Madurai is the nearest airport on this side.
The last stretch
Public transport thins out near Suryanelli. Arrange a taxi from Munnar if you arrive late, and ask your accommodation for the map pin and the final directions before you set off.
Before you set off
- Hill roads are slow: plan generous travel times and avoid arriving after dark if you can.
- In the monsoon, check road and landslide updates before travelling.
- Fuel up and withdraw cash in Munnar or the larger towns on the way.
- Share your arrival time with your accommodation.
