Travelling to Munnar and Kodaikanal in the Monsoon: A Practical Guide

Updated 20 October 2026 · By the Hostyard Experience and Stay team

The monsoon turns the hills a deep green, fills the waterfalls and empties the viewpoints. It is a lovely time to visit if you travel with patience and a flexible plan. Here is how to do it well.

When the rain comes

Munnar and Suryanelli get most of their rain from the south-west monsoon, roughly June to September. Kodaikanal gets rain from both monsoons, with heavy showers often in October and November.

On the road

Hill roads can be affected by landslides and fallen trees after heavy rain. Check road updates before you set off, travel in daylight and leave plenty of time. If authorities close a road, wait it out rather than looking for a shortcut.

What to pack

  • A proper rain jacket and quick-dry clothes.
  • Shoes with grip for wet paths.
  • A dry bag or zip-lock bags for your phone and documents.
  • Something warm: rain makes the hills cold.
  • Leech socks if you plan forest walks.

What still works in the rain

Waterfalls are at their best, the tea estates glow green and the mist makes even short walks atmospheric. Some jeep trips, treks and viewpoints may not be possible in bad weather, so keep a few slow days in the plan and enjoy the lounge and the verandah.

Quick answers

Does the Kolukkumalai jeep run in the monsoon?

It depends on the weather and the operators on the day. Ask the team the evening before; heavy rain or poor visibility can mean a cancelled trip.

Is the monsoon a good time to visit Kodaikanal?

It can be, with fewer crowds and green forests, but October and November often bring heavy rain. Keep a day spare in your plans.
